Call to stop the exhibition about pro-nazi Croatian cardinal Alojzije Stepinac.

Young European Socialists are deeply concerned by the exhibition dedicated to Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac, currently taking place at the European Parliament upon the initiative of European People’s Party MEP Marijana Petir from Croatian party HSS. The Archbishop was a well-known supporter of the Ustashe pro-nazi regime. Facts about his collaboration were established in the verdict declared by the Supreme Court of People’s Republic of Croatia in 1946.

HSS, the current governing party in Croatia, has illustrated itself by the nomination of a renowned revisionist, Zlatko Hasanbegović, as Minister for Culture  and has conducted several acts of rehabilitation of the Ustashe regime, which actively collaborated with the Nazis during the second world war.

At least 83 000 people were killed in concentration and extermination camp Jasenovac as a result of this regime’s policy, in addition to the hundreds of thousands more outside the camp just because they were Serbs, Roma, Jews, antifascists or they didn’t support Ustasha regime.  Archbishop Stepinac was part of that regime as chief vicar of Ustasha army as well as occupation forces.ntifascist

We are dismayed by the authorisation of this exhibition by the European Parliament. The European communities were born in the aftermath of the second world war as a means to prevent the dark hours of fascism from ever coming back. Especially at times when fascist movements are on the rise in Europe, we cannot tolerate that European institutions enable to promote such a despicable character.

We solemnly ask the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, to denounce this exhibition and to make it stop immediately.
