ECOSY welcomes Commission’s proposal on Youth Guarantee

Yesterday European Commission published their proposal for the recommendation on Youth Guarantee, an initiative ECOSY has been campaigning for since 2009. The proposal defines the Youth Guarantee very closely to what we have been working for:

“Introducing the Youth Guarantee to ensure that all young people up to age 25 receive a quality offer of a job, continued education, an apprenticeship or a traineeship within four months of leaving formal education or becoming unemployed.”

Albeit there are many open questions from implementation to financing of the Youth Guarantee, this is nonetheless great news for the youth of Europe! Europe desperately needs  concrete measure from the European institutions to tackle the serious consequences that the economic crisis has created. The message must be that the young generations cannot be the ones to pay the highest price of the failure of the markets.

What is needed now is a strong commitment from the European Council next week to guarantee the financing of the Youth Guarantee through the European Funds, and the implementation in every country in Europe. Without these commitments the recommendation ends up as yet another set of empty promises and the inequality between the young Europeans continues to grow. We need to ensure that every young person in Europe has an equal and fair start in life, to this challenge the Youth Guarantee responds to. Let’s make sure it will also become a reality for everyone!
