Young European Socialists calls for effective changes on this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

On IDAHOT day 2015, we can look back on the past year and be proud of a lot of really progressive steps on LGBTQIA rights being taken by our socialist and social democratic family across Europe. Despite these positive steps however the situation faced by so many LGBTQIA people across Europe and the world is one of living in fear of discrimination, hatred and violence on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity.

There is still a lot of work to do to prevent the daily homophobic, transphobic and biphobic attacks and insults that LGBTQIA people live through all over Europe. To ensure that all LGBTQIA people can live free from fear these abuses must be tackled at an EU level, national level and in our local communities.

As Young European Socialists we are committed to fighting discrimination in all forms, and demand:

  • A comprehensive EU Framework Directive on combating hate crimes and incitements to hatred against LGBTQIA people.
  • Effective anti-discrimination legislation for LGBTQIA people in all EU States.
  • Reform of the educational curriculum across the EU to reflect real diversity in society, in terms of not only LGBTQIA representation, but also of women, people of colour, people with disabilities, people with a migration history, etc.

We in the Young European Socialists will continue to fight the rights of all LGBTQIA people and the end to hatred and discrimination in all of our societies on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. Every person has the right to be free , the right to be equal and the right to be queer.
