Solidarity with Polish women : my body my rights !

Young European Socialists condemn in the strongest terms the new legislation on abortion proposed by Catholic Church and supported by the very right wing Prime minister in Poland.

While Poland already has one of the most restrictive law regarding abortion, the new legislation will make it impossible for women to terminate a pregnancy even when they have been raped, victims of incest, when the fœtus is malformed, or when the life of the woman is in danger.

Tens of thousands people marched in the streets of Poland, left churches, organised public rallies to protest against this backward and reactionary measure.

This legislation would only push women to perform abortions themselves in horrific conditions. It will once again harm the ability of women to decide for themselves, and will lead to the death of many. We refuse that the life of a fœtus take precedent over that of a woman.

We support all the women and men who are protesting against this measure, and we ask the European Union to speak and act very strongly against it.

This legislation goes against the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which clearly states in its preamble that « the Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity”. Equality, freedom and human dignity are clearly breached by this piece of legislation : therefore we call on the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council to speak and act against it.
