YES Network Coordinator Baris Onel: Unite Cyprus Now!

Far right extremism had led to a division of Cyprus for more that 40 years. The consequences of nationalism had been severe to generations of Cypriots who either had to be refugees or had lost their loved ones.

Today, the leaders of Greek and Turkish Cypriots will be meeting in Crans-Montana, Switzerland for an attempt to be able to reach a comprehensive settlement that would answer to the sensitivities of both communities and end the Cyprus problem. The resolution of the Cyprus problem in democratic ways would inevitably be an extremely great example not only for Europe but also for all world. In today’s world which has been plagued by war, populism and far right extremism, a solution found to the Cyprus problem would give young generations hope that humankind could still find ways of compromises without the need of violence. It would show the people of the Middle East who suffer through terror and violence everyday near Cyprus, that differences could be overcome with mutual respect and understanding and that diversity brings more colors into our communities.

Cyprus problem is a threat to the young Cypriots. Cyprus problem is a threat to the mothers and fathers in Cyprus. Any condition that is threatening would be inhumane and anything inhumane cannot be progressive. The future of all Cypriots depends on the solution of the Cyprus problem. It is a necessity to unite Cyprus now and end the division in the last divided capital of Europe.

Therefore, YES demands both Greek and Turkish Cypriot Leaders Mr. Nikos Anastasiades and Mr. Mustafa Akinci to be brave and progressive in the compromises that they are aiming to find and considerate to the sensitivities of all people living in Cyprus. YES would also underline that should we could be of any help, we are more than willing to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem on all levels. Let us set an example for the whole world and show how peace, democracy and mutual understanding would always prevail! #UniteCyprusNow!
