YES Presidium: The attitudes of the Policia Nacional last Sunday in Catalonia are totally unacceptable

The attitudes of the Policia Nacional last Sunday in Catalonia are totally unacceptable and must be condemned to its full extent.

The attitude of the EPP-lead Government is contrary to the rule of law and the utter respect that all of its citizens deserve. To respond to the pacific participation in the illegal referendum called by the Catalan government and in the further demonstrations with such an aggressive police repression is incompatible with the democratic principles of a country that belongs to the European Union.

The Government of Catalonia must cease its intents to violate the rule of law, the Statute of Catalonia and the Spanish Constitution through the pursuit of an illegal political process.

The illegal and unconstitutional actions by the Catalan government cannot, in any case, become an excuse or ground for such brutal police intervention. Police must act in compliance to the law and under principles of fairness and proportionality and on Sunday that was not the case in their actions against peaceful citizens.

Thus, YES – Young European Socialists will continue to follow the situation in Catalonia, supporting its member organisations – JSC and JSE – and urging the European Union, the Government of Mariano Rajoy and the Government of Carles Puigdemont to put an end on this whirlwind of mutual ignorance and to reach an agreement and a political solution that the citizens in Catalonia and Spain have demanded for a very long time.
